Free AI resources

Choose the right AI, plan, and first system.

Use the calculator, compare the four leading personal AI tools, and decide whether a paid plan is actually worth the money.

Free resource 01

Find the first AI system worth building.

A useful system has recurring volume, workable inputs, a clear good result, and room for human review. This calculator turns that into time, cost, payback, and first-year return.

01

Name one recurring task

Calculate one task at a time. Broad jobs hide bad math.

02

Check whether AI fits the task

High volume means nothing if the work sits outside AI’s reach.

03

Subtract the real cost

Setup, review, and software still count.

Free resource 02

Which AI should you use?

All four can do good work. The right starting point depends on where your work lives and what you need the tool to do most often.

Answer three questions, then use the detailed comparisons below to check the recommendation against your own work.

Start with
ChatGPT

Choose it if you want one flexible personal AI that can cover most kinds of work.

Plan level

Free

Run the same real task several times before paying. A paid plan should remove a limit you can already feel.

ChatGPT

My default all-around starting point

Start here when
Choose it if you want one flexible personal AI that can cover most kinds of work.
Where it shines
Mixed work across writing, files, images, voice, research, coding, projects, and reusable GPTs.
Weakness
There are a lot of modes and features to learn, and broad requests can still produce generic work without good context.

Claude

Focused thinking, writing, files, and code

Start here when
Choose it if your work is mostly thinking through documents, writing, building, or working directly with files.
Where it shines
Long documents, careful writing, research synthesis, code, reusable skills, Claude Cowork, and Claude Code.
Weakness
Heavy daily use can push you into a higher-capacity plan, and it is less connected to Google apps than Gemini.

Gemini

The clearest fit for Google-centered work

Start here when
Choose it if most of your work already lives in Google and you want AI close to those files and apps.
Where it shines
Gmail, Docs, Drive, large files, Deep Research, Gemini Notebook, media creation, and Antigravity.
Weakness
Features differ between personal Google AI plans and work accounts, so the plan page can be harder to read at a glance.

Grok

Live web, X, voice, and fast-moving media

Start here when
Choose it if live information, X, voice, or fast media work matters more than a traditional office setup.
Where it shines
Real-time web and X search, voice, coding, connectors, and image and video generation in one app.
Weakness
It is not my first pick for a document-heavy Google workflow, and current information still needs a source check before you trust it.
My rule:

Pick one default tool and get good at it. If two look close, give both the same real file and the same real task, then keep the one whose result needs less fixing.

Free resource 03

Should you pay for AI?

A higher plan is useful when it removes a limit from work that already matters. Paying first and hoping the value appears later is usually backwards.

Plan levelBest fitWhen to payAccount
Free

Learning, occasional questions, and testing one real task.

Do not pay yet. Use the free plan until a useful habit repeatedly hits a real limit.

Standard individual paidPlus or Pro, usually around $20 to $30

Daily personal work, more files, stronger models, and fewer interruptions.

Pay when the free plan blocks work that is already saving you time or improving an important result.

Heavy-use individualPro, Max, or Ultra, often $100 to $200 or more

People who use AI for hours every day and repeatedly hit lower-plan limits.

Upgrade only after you can name the limit, the work it blocks, and why removing that limit is worth more than the price.

Business or Team

Two or more people who need shared billing, admin controls, and a work account.

Use it when AI belongs to the company, more than one person needs access, or work data should not live in a personal account.

Enterprise

Organizations with formal security, compliance, identity, retention, or procurement requirements.

Let IT and legal drive this choice. An individual should not buy enterprise features just to get a stronger model.

Why the model works this way

AI helps some tasks and hurts others.

Volume and structure matter.

The federal automation playbook checks transaction volume, data structure, rules, judgment, and system access before choosing a technology.

Task fit beats hype.

In the 2026 peer-reviewed frontier study, AI users were 25.1% faster on suitable work but 19% less likely to be correct on a task outside the frontier.

Use measured value.

Current economic research treats task-level time savings, avoided costs, quality-adjusted output, and gains that last as different parts of AI value.
